Namibia's green hydrogen revolution could ignite a sustainable energy future for Africa

In the heart of Southern Africa, Namibia is making headway with its green hydrogen initiative. The project, led by Namibia-based Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, partly owned by German renewables company Enertrag, represents a significant leap towards sustainable energy independence for the continent.  Hyphen was announced as the preferred bidder in 2021 for the project in the Namib Desert's Tsau //Khaeb National Park.

Namibia’s green hydrogen initiative gathers momentum

Last October, Hyphen announced a collaboration with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) to establish a funding facility aimed at propelling the project forward.

The DBSA’s Project Preparation Facility will contribute to the partial funding of essential development workstreams, including engineering and environmental assessments, leading up to the final investment decision.

“The finalisation of this funding commitment demonstrates the belief of DBSA in the Hyphen project,” CEO of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, Marco Raffinetti, said in a company statement, emphasizing the pivotal role the Southern African region can play in leveraging its renewable resources and participating in the financing of the energy transition.

“We look forward to walking the journey with DBSA to financial close, where we hope that both these organisations will be significant providers of debt funding to the project.”

Adding to the project’s momentum, the German government earlier this year presented a Letter of Intent (LOI) to Enertrag, signaling the potential designation of Hyphen’s project as a “strategic foreign project” of interest to Germany. This status, reserved for high-priority global projects, would enable greater support through Germany’s foreign trade promotion instruments.

The project’s economic and environmental implications are profound. As a clean energy source, green hydrogen could significantly reduce carbon footprints. Moreover, the initiative promises substantial economic benefits, potentially transforming Namibia into a hub for clean energy technology and creating new avenues for job creation and economic growth.

Namibia’s strategic positioning, bolstered by its geological wealth, including reserves of platinum group metals essential for electrolyzers, could enable it to become a low-cost leader in the hydrogen export market.
