Sonatrach and Chevron officials are in discussions for possible partnerships in Algeria, the state oil company said.

Algeria’s state-backed energy company held technical workshops and presentations, following which Chevron showed “a keen interest in the potential of the Algerian mining sector," Sonatrach said.

Concrete areas of for partnership have been identified, while next steps and approach agreed upon by the two entities, Sonatrach added, without giving more details.

Algeria, in a bid to meet domestic energy demand by raising production, has said it wants to cooperate with international companies, but interest has been thin since protest earlier this year led to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepping down.

Contract terms have also been a hurdle for international oil and gas companies, even as Algeria looks to amend its energy laws to attract foreign investors.
